Mary (name changed for child privacy) was born to a single mother. She has two older sisters and one brother. Unfortunately, their mother got ill and died in July 2010. 45 new students who had lost any chance to attend school, are now registered in new schools through the efforts of Malaika and their partners in Kenya.
In the parts of Nairobi where Malaika works, the unemployment rate is at least 50%. Every Kenyan child learns at an early age that education is an absolute necessity in such a competitive job market. Without primary, secondary and some post-secondary training, it is almost impossible to find employment.
Through our work in Nairobi slums, we have met many students who want to attend school but who are not able without sponsor help. Some of these are orphans, some partial orphans and some from very poor families.
